When ideating, I was into Chicago (The Musical) at the time and so I wanted to so something with media, murder, or both. So, most of my thumbnails have a sort of “media frenzy” vibe to it or otherwise chaotic vibe. We ended up choosing the thumbnail depicting a prison riot in which the viewer has to decipher who set the fire.
In the sketch, I really wanted to focus on gesture and opening up the poses of the prisoners/prisoner guards. I wanted to show a narrative in every inch of the canvas with the body language of those in the scene. It really was a lesson in nonverbal communication.
For the colors, I wanted a fiery, saturated palette that conveyed heat to match the intensity of the scene itself.
Paper Time! Plus the fire is actually there now!
And some final shading!
